Test indications
- Diagnostic de la bartonellose canine (endocarditis, neuroretinitis, uveitis, joint disorders, granulomatous hepatitis, granulomatous lymphadenitis, rhinitis, general disorders: lethargy, anemia, weight loss, etc.).
- Detection of asymptomatic carriers (in the context of blood donor dogs, or live dogs in contact with immunocompromised people).
Test characteristics
- Real-time RT-PCR
- Detection threshold
- Quantitative analysis of bacterial or viral loads
Samples to be taken
- On a living animal: whole blood (EDTA), Aqueous humor (EDTA or dry), lymph node aspirate, cerebrospinal fluid (EDTA or dry), synovial fluid (EDTA or dry tubes), pericardial effusion (EDTA or dry tube)
- Postmortem: tracheal or respiratory tract sample, lung on a dry tube.
- On dead animal: to be determined based on clinical signs (blood, lymph node, aqueous humor, liver, CSF).
Interpretation of the result
- Negative result: Absence of the bacteria or quantity below the detection threshold of the technique.
- Positive result: Presence of the bacteria in the sample. The positive results must be interpreted in the epidemiological-clinical context. The PCR test being quantitative, it is interesting in monitoring treatment in order to evaluate its effectiveness and to assess the risk of zoonosis.
