Detection of bovine pestiviruses (BVD) and sheep (Border Disease Virus) by real-time RT-PCR
Test indications
- Confirmation of diagnosis during abortion or others clinical signs (respiratory disorders, sickly animal, suspicion of mucous membrane disease, etc.)
- Search for IPI within a herd
Good sampling reduces the analytical cost for the breeder. - Screening before introduction into a free herd
Test characteristics
- Real-time RT-PCR
- Detection threshold
- The high sensitivity of the test allows mixture analyzes.
- The limit of detection in the blood is of 1 IPI among 200 negative animals (in practice, mixing per group of 20 animals).
- The limit of detection in tank milk is of 1 IPI among 500 negative animals.
Samples to be taken
- Blood total on EDTA (on live animal) or organs not fixed (lung, spleen) for a clinical suspicion
- Vaginal cells, runt spleen (not fixed) or placental swab at a abortion
- Blood on EDTA for PII search
- Milk on Bronopol (order this product from Scanelis)
Interpretation of the result
- Positive result : presence of Pestivirus in the sample analyzed.
Positive blood mixture: at least one of the animals participating in this mixture is BVD positive. Possibility of carrying out individual identification (option) of infected animals.
The IPI status of an animal must be certified by a confirmatory analysis a month later. - Negative result : absence of Pestivirus or quantity below the detection threshold. Exclusion from IPI status.
