Research of Bartonella by real-time PCR.
Test indication
- Diagnosis of feline bartonellosis (uveitis, endocarditis, lymphadenopathy, neurological disorders, etc.).
- Detection of asymptomatic carriers (blood donor cats, live cats in contact with immunocompromised people).
Test characteristics
- Real-time RT-PCR
- Detection threshold
- Detection of all species of the Bartonella genus (including B. henselae, agent of cat scratch disease)
Samples to be taken
- Diagnosis of feline bartonellosis
- On a living animal: whole blood (EDTA), Aqueous humor (EDTA or dry), lymph node aspirate, cerebrospinal fluid (EDTA or dry), synovial fluid (EDTA or dry tubes), pericardial effusion (EDTA or dry tube)
- On dead animal: to be determined based on clinical signs (blood, lymph node, aqueous humor, liver, CSF).
- Determination of status of asymptomatic animals: whole blood (EDTA).
Interpretation of the result
- Negative result: absence of the bacteria or quantity below the detection threshold of the technique.
- Positive result: Presence of the bacteria in the sample. The positive results must be interpreted in the epidemiological-clinical context. The PCR test being quantitative, it is interesting in monitoring treatment in order to evaluate its effectiveness and to assess the risk of zoonosis.
