Research of Mycoplasma felis by real-time PCR.
Test indications
- Diagnosis of mycoplasmosis in cats showing clinical signs (conjunctivitis, ulcerative keratitis, rhinosinusitis, coryza syndrome, pneumonia in kittens).
- Detection of chronic asymptomatic carriers.
Test characteristics
Samples to be taken
- Eye signs:
- conjunctival cells with a cytobrush (if chronic disorders) or with a dry swab.
- corneal cells in the presence of keratitis: corneal tracing using a hydrophilic membrane (reference on request / material available from Scanelis) or possibly with a dry swab.
- Coryza, rhinosinusitis, pneumonia: oropharyngeal, conjunctival and/or nasal cells, thoracic effusion, bronchoalveolar washing, lung (not fixed) depending on clinical signs.
- Determination of status of asymptomatic animals: oropharyngeal cells (take from the tonsils) with a cytobrush or possibly with a dry swab. Carriage on conjunctival cells is rare.
Interpretation of the result
- Negative result: Absence of the bacteria or quantity below the detection threshold of the technique.
- Positive result : Presence of the bacteria in the sample.
If the quantity of bacteria is very low, we indicate this to you on the analysis report. Positive results must be interpreted in the clinical context and depending on the duration of development. The Scanelis test allows a quantitative assessment of the load. For an interpretation of the result in a clinical context, it is necessary to take into account a carriage rate which can reach 20% in oropharyngeal samples in the community (especially in shelters) in asymptomatic animals (bibliographic data). Asymptomatic carriage is very rarely detected on conjunctival samples.
