Test indications

  • Diagnosis of salmonellosis in animals with clinical signs (varying in intensity from mild to severe which can lead to death, combining signs of enterocolitis and endotoxemia, anorexia, hyperthermia, abdominal pain, serous to hemorrhagic diarrhea).
  • Detection of asymptomatic carriers (particularly in the community if clinical cases or if zoonosis is suspected).

Test characteristics

Samples to be taken

  • Digestive signs: rectal sampling with a dry swab without culture medium.
  • Determination of status of asymptomatic animals: rectal sampling with a dry swab.
  • Collect if possible before initiating antibiotic treatment. Otherwise indicate it on the analysis request form.

Interpretation of the result

  • Negative result: Absence of the bacteria or quantity below the detection threshold of the technique.
  • Positive result : Presence of the bacteria in the sample.
If the quantity of bacteria is very low, we indicate this to you on the analysis report. Positive results must be interpreted in the clinical context, depending on the duration of development and possible treatments. The Scanelis test allows a quantitative assessment of the bacterial load.
For an interpretation of the result in a clinical context, it is necessary to take into account a carriage rate which is generally low in a standard population but which can be higher in the community and/or among domestic carnivores who benefit from a raw food diet. Bacterial loads are always low.
Clinical cases in domestic carnivores are often associated with food (raw diet, contaminated commercial food) but other sources, such as the environment, remain possible.

Recent or current antibiotic treatment at the time of sampling may modify test sensitivity and/or bacterial load.
